Talbalba Herefords

Talbalba is a family owned and operated business. The Reid family have been breeding Herefords for 73 years . Steve's grandfather established Bundarra Herefords in 1953 near Jandowae followed by Jim and Rita Reid building the stud into a nationally recognized herd over Jim's lifetime at Bell. Steve registered his first Talbalba females in 1984 and purchased the heart of the Bundarra cow herd in 2005. In 2012 the herd transitioned from a pure horned herd to the predominately polled herd it is today, selling 70 to 80 polled bulls annually on farm at Bringalily, SE Qld. Topline sires are sourced from the best herds in Australia, New Zealand and the USA with modern reproductive technologies (A.I and E.T) utilised to fast track genetic gain. Data is collected via Sapien's KoolCollect and submitted for performance recording via Breedplan, enhanced by DNA analysis for parent verification and Genomics. Bulls are selected on phenotype and performance recorded data with a reputation for high growth, excellent muscle shape, fertility, temperament and structure from a female base developed over generations of selective breeding.

diamond Talbalba Herefords Objectives
Commercial Focus.

Aim to breed high quality, performance recorded cattle with strong carcase data, physically and reproductively sound and longevity. Cattle are bred to improve our client's bottom line through fertility, high growth, yield, marbling and increased MSA compliance. We have a loyal client base and ensure our relationships are long term through open and honest communication.

Utilise performance recording and modern technology.

Performance recording via Breedplan is used to scientifically analyse and improve accuracy in selection especially on hard to measure traits (eg calving ease and milk). Data is collected via Sapien's KoolCollect App. Traits measured include DOB, BWT, CE, 200D, 400D, SS, EMA, IMF AND FATS. DNA is collected via Tsu's for parent verification and Genomics.

Nutrition- pasture fed operation.

Our females are run under commercial conditions on native and improved grasses with dry lick supplementation as required. Bulls are raised on improved pastures in Summer and forage oats in Winter. The only exception to this is severe drought conditions when they are supplementary fed a silage based ration in the paddock. Sale preparation is generally 2 months on oats. This feeding philosophy optimises fertility, soundness and longevity.

Reproductive soundness and Fertility.

Bull Cohort: Bulls have a complete BBSE including semen testing for motility and morphology by our veterinarian Dr Britten Lockie from BL Veterinary services. Bulls are vaccinated as per the Australian Cattle Veterinarian (ACV) Immune Ready Guidelines including Tick Fever. Female Base: Heifers calve unassisted at 2 year old and are expected to rebreed annually without exception. PTIC empty females are removed from the herd. Reproductive technologies are used to increase selection intensity and fast track genetic gain by utilising AI and ET. Zero tolerance for poor temperament, bad feet and untidy udders.
