Chrome Sheep Studs possesses over 20 years of experience in breeding sheep for the commercial prime lamb producer. Our focus is on breeding sheep that produce commercially oriented, well-muscled prime lambs desired by both domestic and export markets. Our primary goal at Chrome is to breed sheep that will maximize the dollar per hectare return for our clients.
To achieve this, we maintain a commercial focus in our studs, selecting sheep based on recorded breeding values, raw measured data, and visual assessment. Extensive embryo transfer programs across all breeds ensures production and genetic improvement in sheep quality. All sheep at Chrome are bred in a commercial setting for ease of care and management, hardiness, and strong performance. Maternal ewes over 2 years of age are managed as a minimal drench flock and in large contemporary groups to ensure they can thrive in typical commercial farming scenarios. We are committed to maintaining our position at the forefront of the industry.
The development of breeds such as the Chromedale Early Lambing Flock rams (ELFs), ICON Southies, ICON 25s and our expansion into Chrome Shedders, showcases our commitment to fulfilling our clients’ needs. With these new breeds now available, we take pride in offering lamb producers a range of options when selecting a ram for their operations from Chrome Sheep Studs.
Chrome Maternals – Chromedale, Chromedale Early Lambing Flocks (ELF), Perendale, and Coopworth – allow producers to introduce a range of desirable maternal traits such as good mothering and excellent fertility into their flocks through proven breed sires tailored to individual requirements.
Chrome Terminals – featuring ICON Southies ICON 25s and ICON Poll Dorsets – bring together superior prime lamb traits such as long, thick bodies, high muscle EBVs, structural soundness, rapid early growth, and finishing ability in performance-recorded sires.
Chrome Shedders – a new venture, the Chrome Shedders will prioritize carcase quality, good constitution, and bone structure similar to our current Chromedale ewes.
We have been breeding sheep for the commercial prime lamb producer for more than 15 years.
We undertake major embryo transfer programs across all breeds, ensuring production and genetic improvements in the quality of genetics we supply.
We keep our studs commercially orientated, selecting sheep on recorded breeding values, raw measured data and visual assessment. Bred for their ease of care and management, hardiness and doing ability, all maternal ewes, once over 2yo are predominately run as a ‘no drench’ flock in large contemporary groups to ensure they can perform in typical commercial farming situations.
Chrome supports their clients to ensure the selection of ram meets the clients commercial goals through offering assistance in setting up production targets, annual ram and flock classing, ram guarantee and assistance in marketing surplus breeding ewes.
