Assessor Comments
Here is a line of mature first cross ewes, 7 years old (red tags). The ewes are predominantly Border Leicester/Merino, with approx. 5 ewes appearing to be a Poll Dorset/Merino cross. The ewes were purchased in lamb from a flock dispersal in the Forbes district in February, and have since lambed down, with the lambs being weaned off the ewes 4 weeks ago. They have been running back with 3x Kraywood Poll Dorset rams (pure Tattykeel blood) since 15th April. All ewes were mouthed at assessment, with all ewes having solid centre teeth, although many were missing outside teeth. Any ewes with mouths not sound enough to rear another lamb were removed. These ewes present a good opportunity for the smaller farmer to secure a line of ewes which have been rejoined, and would be ideal to rear another drop of lambs and then finish for the strong mutton market.
